The 17 South SASP Rifle and Pistol Team

is in our 2nd year with so much to be proud of. This team is composed of students ranging in age from upper elementary through high school. We are based out of the 17 South Rod & Gun Club located just south of Richmond Hill, Georgia. The mission of the Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation (the parent company) “is an educational-athletic organization that exists to introduce school-age youths to the shooting sports and to facilitate their continued involvement by providing, promoting, and perpetuating opportunities to safely and enjoyably participate and compete in a high-quality, team-based sport led by trained adult coaches focused on enhancing the personal growth and development of their athletes”.

Under the leadership from Coach Marion McQueen, our athletes have strengthened their abilities and marksmanship (in their first year) all the way to Nationals in Ohio in July 2023. Throughout competitions, you will see him guiding the shooters and making adjustments as needed to help them to be successful. In practice, he is constantly adjusting and readjusting stances, shooting positions, and gun grips so the shooters are safe and achieving growth. The discipline and structure with which this team thrives is evident throughout their competitions.

Each member of this team roots for and supports the other members on the team. They shoot together. They load magazines together. They travel together. They eat together. They set up and tear down together and not once do they get loud or annoyed with each other. They cheer  for each other and congratulate each other on a job well done. When one of the members is frustrated or doesn’t shoot as fast as they wanted to, they make sure to pump them up and get them mentally ready for the next stage of the shooting competition. The team members make sure that no one is sitting by themselves or excluded.

Practice Information

Since we are a team in its infancy, our Team Manager, Deborah Carlisi, is leading the team with the guidance needed to prepare for the 2023-24 season. Our goal is to assist all shooters who want to be a part of a team, accomplish this. Regardless of whether an athlete can afford to be a part of our team, through fundraising, no athlete will be turned away.
